2007 jeep wrangler unlimited review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It's an anachronism, and should probably be a dinosaur, but no, it's still popular because it fills a need like no other vehicle. Despite its inherent design limitations (we won't call them flaws), primarily balance and storage, the wrangler delivers inimitable fun. Challengers have not been able to steal from the allure of the jeep. The dynasty lives on. jeep engineers have kept the momentum rolling by making timely improvements. It's a perfect fit for the times. It doesn't change or pervert the character of wrangler at all, it just makes the vehicle more attainable, and more desirable for many. It's much more comfortable and convenient, and holds way more stuff, including happy passengers. maybe best of all, a lot more content has been added, especially in the areas of comfort, safety and convenience; and there has been an average price reduction of $1200 down the line. each of the six models of the wrangler uses the same new engine, a 3. 8-liter v6 making 12 more horsepower than the previous trusty inline-6 that's been around for more than 20 years. It has the same peak torque but at a higher range, and that detracts some from the wrangler's uphill performance; but gas mileage is about the same, at 16 city and 19 highway for the 4x4. Seat-mounted front side air bags are optional with some models. walkaroundnaturally, the new wrangler looks just like a jeep; the redesign for 2007 didn't mess with the classic round headlamps, seven-slot grille or upright fold-down windshield, although the windshield is slightly curved, for the first time on a jeep, for better aerodynamics and reduced wind noise. And it's 5. 5 inches wider, with a 3. 4-inch wider track. Jeep says it's 'dramatically brawnier,' but we'd say that's a dramatic statement. The sheetmetal is new, with a slight crown. The halogen headlamps are brighter, and the new front bumper has integrated fog lamps near its center. For the first time, there are step assists under the doors to make climbing up into the jeep easier, and the tail lamps are new. The fender flares are bolted on, so they can be easily taken off and replaced with cooler aftermarket flares. The bumpers, step assists and fender flares are all sturdy, flat-black plastic on the x. the standard soft top is improved for easier removal and installation. The sunrider soft top slides back half way, like a huge sunroof over the front seats. The new optional three-piece modular hardtop (freedom top) has two front panels that easily pop on and off like a t-top, and are stored behind the rear seat. The third panel over the rear seat can be removed separately and stored in the garage. The freedom top yields a total of six open-air possibilities. under the body, there's a new boxed frame that's 100 percent stiffer in bending and 50 percent stiffer in twisting, with seven cross members. This helps in crash results, and enabled a new suspension: steering geometry, shock absorbers, springs and control arms are all different. Wide spaced frame rails cradle the fuel tank between the wheels. Three skid plates protect the fuel tank, transfer case and automatic transmission oil pan. interiorthe 2007 jeep wrangler two-door is a lot roomier inside than pre-2007 models, thanks to its increased width. The comfortable new high-back front seats, using a handsome stain-resistant gray or khaki-colored fabric in the sahara and rubicon, offer 5. 1 inches more shoulder room and 4. 6 inches more hip room. The removable rear seat provides 3. 9 inches more shoulder room, 1. 6 inches more hip room and 1 inch more leg room for each of the two passengers. There's also 2 more inches behind the rear seat, which now folds to provide nearly twice the cargo capacity as before. the cabin is 20 percent quieter, thanks to better isolation from new body mounts, extensive use of something called pcl (polymer constraint layer), and new seals at the doors, along the a-pillar, and at the top of the windshield. as for the larger unlimited, jeep claims that its 86. 7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat folded flat (the headrests flip back, so they don't need to be removed) is more than the toyota fj cruiser, hummer h3 or nissan xterra. That huge difference is because in the regular wrangler, the rear passengers sit directly over the axle and between the wheel wells; in the unlimited, the axle is located behind them. The instruments, including the optional compass and temperature gauges, are easy to read, and the controls are soothingly simple. The solid square buttons look good and are easy to understand and operate. Seven speakers, including subwoofer, is a whole lot of speakers for the cabin of a jeep, and we think this is a good thing. The locking glove box is about one-third larger than before, and there's a convenient grab handle above it. This is a jeep, after all, so the grab handle will be used in the bouncy bits. . Though no cadillac, the wrangler is quieter, roomier and more comfortable than any of its predecessors. For 2002, jeep has expanded the wrangler model line, making the six-cylinder engine available for considerably less than last year. Increased air flow improves the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, which is quieter than last year. Improved sound is available from a new premium audio system. At first glance, the base se looks attractive, but its low price quickly rises when upgraded upholstery, a rear seat, rear-seat-area carpeting, a stereo and other options are added. A variety of options are available, including the hard top 920), which i prefer for security and convenience. the new wrangler x and the sport and sahara models come with a much more powerful 4. 0-liter six-cylinder engine rated at 190 horsepower and 235 pounds-feet of torque. A heavy-duty five-speed manual transmission is standard; three-speed automatics are optional. The open fenders, flip-down windshield, big grille, plastic side curtains and exposed hinges and fasteners are still there, giving the wrangler that rugged, no-nonsense look that has appealed to us for nearly 60 years. one of the biggest decisions when buying a wrangler is selecting the top. Purists prefer the soft top, a high-quality piece of equipment that can be configured according to the weather. Folding the top down takes only a third of the time it took before 2001. The hard top provides more security for expensive gear; i get uncomfortable leaving camera equipment or fly-fishing gear protected only by fabric and clear plastic. It comes with full-height doors and wind-up windows. I felt dry and secure while driving one through a violent thunderstorm one morning before daybreak. Rearward visibility is aided by the rear-window defroster, wiper and washer. Wind noise is greatly reduced. The modular instrument panel and heating and ventilation system are huge improvements over the last-generation (pre-1997) wrangler (the one with the square headlights). Rotary heating, ventilation and air conditioning knobs are an improvement over the old slider controls and are easy to operate when wearing gloves. For 2002, airflow has been increased and the fan makes less noise. the high-back front seats are comfortable and offer good lateral support. For those who have dogs or drive through deep mud, the interior can be easily cleaned. For weekend excursions, the best plan is to leave the back-seat passengers behind, flip the rear seat forward (or remove it) and head for the hills. There's enough space behind the rear seat for a fly rod, a vest and a pair of waders. Flip the rear seat down and there's plenty of room for a tent, a cooler, camping gear and even more fishing equipment. It doesn't get much better than that. research firm j. It's an impressive balancing act. jeep engineers achieved this balance with a rigid chassis and a coil-spring suspension. (older wranglers, pre-1997 models, used a leaf-spring suspension that dated back some 50 years.) coil springs mean less friction and more freedom to fine-tune suspension geometry; the rigidity of the chassis permitted this fine tuning. Coil springs offer enormous suspension travel. Wrangler's quadra-coil suspension boasts an additional seven inches of articulation over the old leaf-spring suspension. greater approach and departure angles mean the wrangler can cross trenches and clamber over rocks and fallen trees that would trap the old jeep. Few vehicles can match the wrangler's rock-climbing ability. At the same time, it does not feel like a utility truck when winding down a curvy road. still, the wrangler is no sports car.
